BTCCSquare news:

WeRide has launched fully autonomous Level-4 robotaxi rides in partnership with Uber on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The service covers 12 square miles, allowing UberX and Uber Comfort riders to be matched with driverless vehicles. A new 'Autonomous' ride type, priced similarly to Comfort, increases the likelihood of a driverless experience.

The expansion follows nearly a year of supervised operations with safety drivers. Certain routes—including highway trips, airport pickups, and inter-island travel—remain under human supervision across approximately 30 square miles. This phased rollout began in December 2024.

Uber and WeRide aim to extend driverless services across Abu Dhabi and into Dubai next. The collaboration also targets 15 additional global cities beyond the UAE, including Riyadh, where supervised rides recently commenced. In the U.S., Uber already offers autonomous rides via Waymo in Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta under separate agreements.
